Jury conferences
Through these
conferences we intend to talk about models and methods of operating at the city
level, which varies depending
on the scale, involved actors, duration, as well as other cultural, economical and
environmental factors.
The conferences will
have as starting point the activity and current concerns of the 3 members of
the jury in the directions set out by the categories judged within the BETA
2016 competition, namely: Urban / Rural Development, Public Space, Initiatives for
architecture, Art in public space and Infrastructure.
The conferences are addressed to the trinomial professional
body - administration - civil society, therefore to all those responsible for researching,
designing, building and maintaining the built environment, to those responsible
for managing the present and future built environment, and not least to all those
who influence and are daily influenced by the built environment.
The three presentations given by Klaus Birthler,
Darko Polic and Árpád Szabó, architects activating in Romania, Serbia and
Hungary, will be followed by a session of open discussions in
order to generate dialogue and networking within the trinomial representatives.

Klaus Birthler
Klaus Birthler is a practicing architect and researcher, specialized in urbanism and territorial planning, concerned about urban revitalization, urban mobility, sustainable development, valorisation of the built and natural heritage and energy efficiency of new and old buildings. Klaus has obtained numerous national and international awards, being finalist of the European Prize for Urban Public Space 2014. Currently, Klaus is counselor for the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
Darko Polic
Architect and urban planner, co-founder at CAB. He works in the Urban Planning, Development and Research Centre of Novi Sad. He has been involved, as team leader, in urban planning projects and analysis, studies on various aspects of the city's development. He has received 4 awards from the National Urbanists' Association of Serbia. He has been a member of both international and national juries from Serbia and Spain (European Prize for Public Space). He has been involved in various national and international programmes.
Árpád Szabó
Architect and urban designer, associate professor at the Department of Urban Planning and Design at the Faculty of Architecture, Budapest University of Technology and Economics. He obtained his architectural PhD (DLA) in 2007. He is leading his own urban design, urban planning and architecture studio based in Budapest. He was the National Secretary of EUROPAN Hungary between 2008 and 2014. He is a member of the public body of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the secretary of the Standing Committee of Urban Sciences.
